Why Go 8x8 for a Gate Post?
Here's the thing about gate posts. They take a hammering that fence posts never do. Every time someone swings a gate open, that post takes the full weight, and it does it hundreds of times a year. A 4x4 will manage a light garden gate. Put a heavy timber field gate or a wide double gate on it and you'll be back out there in two years wondering why it's leaning.
Our 8x8 timber gate posts are built for the jobs where that isn't an option. Driveway gates, entrance gates, five bar gates, sturdy side gates that get used daily. The extra bulk gives your hinges something proper to bite into, and it stops the post twisting under load. If you're hanging something with any real weight to it, this is the post you want.
Getting them Set Properly
An 8x8 post is only as good as the hole you put it in. As a rough guide, you want a third of the post in the ground for a gate, so with a 3m post you're looking at roughly a metre down. Dig wider than you think, around 400mm square, and get plenty of hardcore in the base for drainage.
Post-mix is fine for most jobs and it's a lot quicker, but for a heavy gate we'd suggest a proper concrete mix and letting it cure a good few days before you hang anything on it. Rushing this bit is the single most common reason gate posts fail. Brace it, check it's plumb on both faces, then walk away and leave it alone.
The four way weathered top isn't just for looks either. It sheds water off all four faces instead of letting it sit on the end grain, which is where rot usually starts.

Most people ordering 8x8 gate posts are doing a bigger job than just the gate. We stock everything you need to carry the fence line either side, so you're not chasing bits from three different places.
