How Many 6x1 Gravel Boards Will You Need?
Walk the line of your fence and count the gaps between your posts. One board per bay is the usual answer, and most people match the board length to their panel width. So a 12 metre run with 1.8 metre panels works out at roughly seven bays, which means seven boards. If your ground slopes or dips, add a spare. Sloping gardens eat more timber than flat ones, and a spare board is a lot cheaper than downing tools halfway through a Saturday.
Timber or Concrete Gravel Boards?
Both do the same job, so it really comes down to what you want out of it. Concrete holds up better in permanently wet ground and you will likely never touch it again. Timber costs less, looks better against a timber fence, and you can lift and fit it on your own.
Our 6x1 gravel boards are pressure treated to a high standard, so they will give you years of service in normal conditions. If your bottom fence line sits somewhere that stays soggy all winter, concrete might be the smarter shout, and we stock those in the yard too. If you want the fence to read as timber the whole way down, these are the ones.
Fitting Gravel Boards to Your Fence Posts
With timber posts, most people fix a short cleat or a gravel board clip to the post and screw the board onto that. With recessed concrete posts, the board simply slots into the channel and no fixings are needed at all. Whichever way you go, sit the board so the bottom edge clears the soil rather than sinking into it. That small gap is the entire point of the thing. Timber buried in wet earth draws moisture up and gives in far sooner than timber that can breathe.
What to Expect from Treated Softwood
These are sawn and treated boards, not planed and finished joinery. Expect the odd knot, some colour variation between boards, and a little movement as they settle into your garden. That is wood doing what wood does, and it will not affect performance. Over a few seasons the green treatment weathers down to a soft silver grey, which most people rather like.
