Why Choose 4x4 Timber for Your Fencing Projects

When it comes to building a strong and reliable fence, 4x4 timber is a popular choice for good reason. It offers the strength needed to support panels securely, even in exposed areas where wind and weather can take their toll. This makes it a dependable option for both domestic and trade use.

Our 4x4 timber posts are selected with quality in mind, giving you a solid base for your fencing project. Each post is designed to handle day to day wear while keeping your fence line straight and secure. It is a practical solution that works just as well for simple garden fencing as it does for larger boundary work.

With pressure treatment applied to most options, you can expect a longer lifespan and added protection against the elements. This means less maintenance over time and better value from your investment.

Built for Strength, Stability and Long Term Use

Every fencing project starts with the right support, and that is exactly what our 4x4 timber posts provide. The thickness and structure help prevent movement once installed, keeping your fence firm and in place throughout the seasons. It is a straightforward way to avoid common issues like leaning or shifting posts.

We know that timber is a natural product, and it will respond to its environment over time. Small changes such as slight movement or surface cracks are completely normal and part of the material settling in. This does not affect the strength of the post when installed correctly.

Our team always aims to supply timber that meets high standards, so you can get on with your project without second guessing your materials. It is all about giving you confidence from the moment your order arrives.

Everything You Need to Get the Job Done

To make your fencing project as smooth as possible, we stock everything you need alongside our 4x4 timber posts. You can keep things simple by sourcing all your materials in one place and getting started without delays.

Take a look at the key items many of our customers choose to order together:

  • Gravel boards to protect against ground contact

  • Post mix for quick and solid installation

  • Fixings and screws for a clean, strong finish

By pairing your posts with the right components, you can build a fence that not only looks good but stands up to everyday use. If you are unsure what you need, just get in touch and we will point you in the right direction.

Which 4x4 Post Height Do You Actually Need?

One of the most common questions we get at the yard is which post height to go for, so here is the quick version. As a rule, you want your post to be the height of your fence plus roughly 600mm to go in the ground. So for a standard 6ft (1.8m) panel, a 2.4m 4x4 post gives you the height plus enough underground to hold firm. The same logic works the whole way up our range.

If you are running your fence on a slope, or your ground is soft or exposed to a lot of wind, it is worth sizing up. A bit of extra length in the ground makes a real difference to how solid the finished fence feels. Not sure? Tell us your panel height and where you are fitting, and we will point you to the right post.

How Many Posts and What Spacing

Getting your spacing right before you order saves a lot of hassle later. Standard panels are 1.83m (6ft) wide, so your posts want to sit at roughly 1.83m centres, with a post at each end and one between every panel. For a run of five panels you are looking at six posts, and so on down the line.

A quick tip from us: always order a spare. Timber is a natural product and you often want a bit of wiggle room on site, especially if your run does not divide neatly into full panels. Better to have one left over than to stop the job waiting on a single post.

Getting Your 4x4 Post Set Properly

A 4x4 post is only as strong as the hole it sits in. Dig down about 600mm, pop the post in, check it is dead plumb with a spirit level, then fill around it with postmix. Postmix sets in minutes rather than hours, so you can keep moving along the run without standing about. Brace it while it goes off and you will get a post that does not budge. We would always say let your posts go solid before you hang panels, because giving them that time is what keeps your fence line straight for the long haul.

More Than Just Fencing

Plenty of our customers use 4x4 posts well beyond standard boundaries. They make sturdy uprights for pergolas, carports, gates, garden structures and raised deck frames. The 100mm x 100mm section gives you the strength to carry a proper load, which is why they turn up on all sorts of jobs. If you are not sure the 4x4 is right for your project, drop us a message with the details and we will give you an honest answer.
