Why Concrete Wins at Ground Level
Here's the honest truth about timber posts. They rot. Not straight away, and not because there's anything wrong with them, but because the bottom few inches sit in wet soil year after year and eventually the wood gives in. Recessed concrete fence posts get around that problem completely.
There's nothing down there for the damp to eat away at, so your fence stays standing through whatever a South West winter decides to throw at it. Fit them once and you'll probably never think about them again, which is more than most of us can say about our fencing.
Getting the Sizing Right First Time
The bit people usually get wrong is the length. Your post has to cover the height of the panel, the gravel board sitting underneath it, and whatever goes below ground. That's why we stock the 7ft 3" and 8ft 3" intermediate posts, because between them they cover the two most common fence heights once everything's added up.
As a rough guide, allow around a quarter of the post below ground so it's properly anchored. If you're fencing on a slope or somewhere exposed, give us a ring before you order and we'll talk it through. Much cheaper than buying twice.
Fitting them Without the Faff
The recesses do most of the thinking for you. Set your line out first, dig your holes, then get your end posts in and levelled before anything else goes near the ground. Run a string line between them and every post after that has something to follow. Postcrete around each one, drop your gravel board into the pre-drilled holes, then slide your panels straight down the grooves. No brackets, no clips, no drilling into concrete on a Sunday afternoon. Just take your time over the spacing, because concrete posts aren't nearly as forgiving as timber if you're an inch out.
What Else You'll Want on the Van
Posts are only half the job. We keep gravel boards, closeboard panels, feather edge boards, arris rails and postcrete in the yard, so you can sort the whole fence line in one order instead of chasing bits from three different places on a Saturday morning.
Order Yours Today
Order your recessed concrete fence posts online in a couple of minutes and we'll usually have them with you inside one to five working days, with a two hour delivery window texted over the night before. Concrete is heavy, so do bear in mind we're kerbside delivery and our driver will need decent access for the van.
If you'd rather see them in person, come and find us at Morton Farm in Thornbury, open Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings, and grab a sandwich while you're here. Not sure what you need? Call us on 0117 251 0092 and we'll get you sorted.
