Choosing the Right 5x5 Post for Your Project

Not every job calls for a 5x5 post, but when it does, nothing else really comes close. If you are putting up heavy fence panels, building a retaining structure, or working on a project where strength is not optional, this is the size you want. The extra width gives you more surface area to fix into and more weight to hold things steady once everything is in place.

We get asked all the time whether a 4x4 would do the job instead. Sometimes it will, and we will tell you that honestly. But for exposed sites, taller panels, or anything that needs to take a bit of punishment over the years, a 5x5 post is worth the step up. It is one of those things where spending a little more upfront saves you hassle down the line.

How to Get the Most Out of Your 5x5 Posts

Getting a good post into the ground is only half the job. How you install it matters just as much. We always recommend setting your 5x5 post at least 600mm into the ground, with postcrete or concrete around the base. That depth gives you the grip you need to keep things solid through wind, rain, and everything else the British weather throws at it.
If you are working on softer ground, it is worth going a little deeper. And if you are not sure, give us a ring. We have seen just about every type of soil and situation out there, and we are happy to talk you through what will work best. No charge, no fuss, just honest advice from people who deal with timber every day.

Available Lengths to Suit Your Build

Our 5x5 post range comes in 2.4m, 3.0m, and 3.6m lengths, so you have got options whether you are building a standard garden fence or something with a bit more height. The shorter lengths work well for most domestic boundaries, while the 3.6m posts give you the extra reach for taller panels or deeper concrete beds.

If you are not sure which length you need, a quick rule of thumb is to take the height of your fence panel, add the depth you plan to set into the ground, and go from there. Simple as that. And if math is not your thing, we are only a phone call away.

Why 5x5 Posts Last Longer in the Ground

The bit of a post that fails first is almost always the section sitting at ground level. That is where moisture collects and where the timber takes the most abuse. A 5x5 post has more material to lose before it becomes a problem, which is a large part of why the lifespan runs up to 15 years rather than the shorter run you would get from a thinner post in the same conditions.

Every 5x5 post we sell is pressure treated properly, not just given a coat of something and sent out the door. The treatment goes into the timber, so when you cut a post to length you are not exposing raw untreated wood right through the middle. That said, we would still tell you to put an end grain preservative on any fresh cut before it goes in the ground. It takes two minutes and it makes a real difference.

What Our 5x5 Posts are Good for Beyond Fencing

Most people come to us for fencing, but the 5x5 post does a lot more than hold up panels. We sell plenty to customers building pergolas, carports, gate posts, and raised structures where a 4x4 would look undersized and feel it too. If you are hanging a heavy timber gate, a 5x5 post is the sensible choice for the hanging side at the very least.

They also work well as corner posts on a longer fence run, even if you use something thinner in between. A stronger corner keeps the whole line true, and it costs very little to upgrade just the posts that are actually doing the work.

Buying 5x5 Posts as a Trade Customer

If you are fitting fences week in, week out, the price you pay per post makes a real difference to your margins. Our trade account gives you discounted pricing across the range, and you can order online with your rates already applied instead of ringing round for quotes every time.

We hold good stock levels on the sizes that move, so you are not left waiting on a delivery that was meant to land on Tuesday. Our fleet is tracked, you get a two hour window the night before, and the driver will put the posts where you need them as long as we can get to the spot. Sign up for a trade account online and it takes a few minutes.
