Why Fitters Keep Coming Back to Notched Fence Posts
If you've ever tried cutting mortice slots into a post by hand, you'll know exactly why these sell so well. The notches are already machined, so your arris rails drop straight in and sit level. No chiselling, no measuring the same slot four times, no fence that's crept an inch off line by the time you reach the last post.
There's a strength benefit too. A closeboard fence built this way takes a battering from the wind far better than standard panels, follows sloping ground properly, and if a board splits one winter you replace that single board rather than the whole bay.
Working Out How Many Posts and Rails You Need
Walk your fence line first and mark where each post is going, then add one extra, because every run needs a post at both ends. Three notches means three rails per bay, so multiply from there once you know your post count.
Worth remembering: most people fitting a 1.8m fence sink roughly 600mm of the post into the ground. Picture your finished height with that in mind before you order. If the sums are doing your head in, ring us with your fence length and we'll work it out with you.
Setting Your Posts So They Actually Stay Put
A notched post is only as good as the hole it sits in. Dig deeper than feels necessary, get it plumb, and use postcrete rather than soil and hardcore. Slope the top of the concrete away from the timber so rainwater runs off instead of sitting against the post.
Fit a gravel board along the bottom of each bay while you're at it. It keeps your featheredge boards up out of the wet ground, and a gravel board is far cheaper to swap out in ten years than a whole run of boards.
One Thing People Forget on Sloping Gardens
If you cut a post down to suit a slope or a low boundary, treat the fresh cut with an end grain preserver before it goes anywhere near the ground. Pressure treatment doesn't reach right through the middle of the timber, and an exposed cut end is the first place rot gets a foothold. We keep preserver, post caps and postcrete on the shelf, so pick them up in the same order and save yourself a trip.
